Causes of circuit breaker closing failure

Circuit breaker closing failure is a common fault in power operation. Its causes can generally be summarized into two categories: electrical secondary circuit faults and mechanical faults of the operating mechanism.

I. Reasons related to electrical circuits

Loss of power to the closing circuit is a common cause of malfunction, such as a blown fuse in the control circuit, loose wiring, or a broken wire. Additionally, when the operating voltage is too low (below approximately 85% of the rated voltage), the electromagnetic force generated by the closing coil is insufficient to overcome mechanical resistance, thus preventing closing. Furthermore, poor contact due to oxidation or wear of the closing button contacts, related relay malfunctions, and accidental locking of the anti-pumping relay can also interrupt the transmission of the closing command.

II. Reasons related to mechanical structure

The closing spring is a critical power component. If it becomes fatigued, deformed, or broken, it will not be able to store enough energy to drive the closing mechanism. Deformation or loosening of the linkage mechanism will disrupt energy transmission, leading to unstable closing. If the tripping mechanism is stuck or improperly adjusted, the phenomenon of "tripping immediately after closing" may occur, indicating an inability to maintain the closed state.

III. Comprehensive Judgment and Handling Recommendations

When closing the circuit breaker fails, first check if the control power supply voltage is normal and if the fuse is intact. If the electrical circuit is normal but the circuit still cannot be closed, it can generally be determined to be a mechanical fault. In this case, the equipment should be shut down immediately and a professional should be arranged for repair. It is especially important to note that the circuit breaker should only be attempted again after the short circuit or overload fault has been identified and eliminated, in order to prevent equipment damage or safety accidents.
